An oasis of South Beach cool in an otherwise overwrought neighborhood.
Struggle past three hulking bouncers, press through a throng of international jetsetters sheathed in the latest Versace, and enter an unexpectedly laid-back lounge where anything goes. The whitewashed brick front room plays host to the bar, a long slab of grey stone. The lofty space upstairs is typically reserved for private parties (often hosted by the nearby modeling agency).
The key to the back lounge is intimacy, and strangers seem to have no problem achieving it. The small but airy area with backlit pictures of fern leaves and seven small banquettes allows people mix and mingle freely, abetted by the prompt cocktail service and the mix of Guns N Roses, Moby, and Jay-Z, spun by the DJs. The Bel Lychee, a martini of gargantuan proportions made with Stoli vanllia and lychee and peach juice, makes a nice choice from the lengthy specialty cocktail list. |
