In this era of raids and closings, what's this super-club's secret to staying the course? It's more inertia than innovation. The cavernous space--popular with Chelsea men and straight partyers on various nights--is centered around a large, sunken dance floor that doubles as a gymnasium-style roller rink. The Crystal Room above the front bar, with its backlit world map, has a funky network newsroom feel. A walled-off rear lounge, furnished with flea market decor, is the perfect place to chat.
Other areas are not as successful. A tented lounge off the dance floor is too dark and loud for comfort, and the main room's ceiling is so high that sometimes the music gets lost in the rafters. Both front and back bars still look modern, with handsome, poured-concrete tops, but disco balls above the dance floor, enclosed in painted wooden pyramids that scream hobby shop, look ready to come crashing down.
