Wednesday through Sunday, this Lafayette Street standby transforms itself into the trendiest of lounges. At 10pm each night, the space is closed, the tables and chairs vanish, and the multiple rooms are redone into an upscale bar, complete with deep banquettes, draped ceilings and go-go dancers. Colorful double-shot doses of syrupy cocktails, served in syringes, go for $10 a pop.
Four rooms offer four different soundtracks, with remixes of rock hits and Top 40 hip-hop dominating. Celebs (including Jim Carrey and Bruce Willis) can be spotted tucked away in roped-off VIP areas. But for all its clearly successful promotion, the club feels strikingly un-downtown: Suits mix it up with European partyers, while thin women in dresses grind enthusiastically against straight men in too-tight shirts and gelled hair. Reserve a table to snack on mini-burgers for $10 or Beluga caviar for $150. |
