The African safari decor of Lafayette Street's white-hot lounge is completely appropriate, considering what a zoo it's become. Since its late 2001 opening, this sizable space with its carved wooden masks, fat candles and Peter Beard photographs has been teeming with socialites and celebrities. You're as likely to see Justin Timberlake wandering the room dispensing vodka to unaccompanied ladies as "Oz" star Dean Winters sipping a Heineken in the corner. A crowd of young models, Wall Streeters and fashionistas round out the roster.
While bottle service at the over-subscribed tables starts at around $225, you can still get a mixed drink at the bar for $9. The trick is getting in: but with them an ounce of charm carries more weight than a ton of attitude. If you dress up, play nice and, above all, try to look as if you belong, you just might make it inside. |
