Michael Alut's first venture since Pangea only adds to the tumultuous Bleecker Street foot traffic. Once past selective doormen, the velvet brocade curtains part to reveal a 7,000-square-foot gothic theme park. Its two limestone-walled rooms are stuffed with disparate details--crystal chandeliers, clear plastic Philippe Starck chairs, Kasbah tents, trees and giant copper arms reaching down from the ceiling with trays of candles--in fact, almost every available surface is ablaze.
The well-dressed revelers mingle with live drummers whose sounds complement the DJ's mix of house, hip-hop and reggae on the packed floors of both rooms. The VIP lounge sits a few feet above the main hall where patrons grind or recline on low moss couches circling the periphery of this cathedral space. The winner at this nightly Carnivale is always the staff, decked in flowing robes and Venetian masks--they lend a sultry feel to the otherwise Renaissance Faire aesthetic. |
