Enter through the pitch-black velvet curtain corridor of this unassuming Lower East Side "tailor shop" and you will find yourself in the land of Milk and Honey--a speakeasy-style bar. The small candle-lit interior includes a 15-seat lounge area in front, a classic short bar and five booths. The drinks, prepared with freshly squeezed juices, arrive at your table on a silver platter, sometimes with fresh strawberries and cream.
But wait, good things in life never come that easy. Visitors to this buzzed-about, yet polite and mellow, lounge must call in advance, assuming they are connected enough to get the secret number and address. A surveillance system installed at the front door insures that only announced invitees are buzzed in.
Sasha the owner says he opened Milk and Honey as a reaction to the celebrity-worshipping club scene and the rowdy meat market bars of New York. He strictly enforces eight "Rules of the Bar" such as "no name-dropping, no star-f--king" and "gentleman will not introduce themselves to ladies." But as Milk and Honey protests too much, its discreet "no pose" attitude has made it the hippest spot of them all. |
